RHAPSODY OF SPRING by Carolyn Riker

The mornings come sooner and daylight lasts longer…

It’s the first hint of spring. Songbirds chortle and squirrels scurry to celebrate. Nesting has begun. The wee tree frogs sing and the owls hoot a mating lullaby. The air smells mild with a hint of warmth. The sun evaporates the cold and casts a knitted sweater adorned with rosebuds as I walk my small garden. Snowdrops and crocuses then daffodils, tulips and hyacinths burst through the slumbering sodden soil. It’s like a perpetual symphony. I get dizzy with delight. The lead up is exhilarating as I take note of the incredible beauty as nature unfolds in its humble way.

Rhapsody of Spring
by Carolyn Riker

The buds unfurl
blushingly
into warmer days
winter’s sleepy hand
ruffles spring’s tendrils
a flirtatious giggle
spring sparkles in the dew
she gives winter a bouquet
of violets
and weaves her crown of gold
frosty edges meet
a sultry creation
rhapsody of the earth
shaking stardust
birthing
anew
