This poem surfaced
after experiencing, "Tipi Time," recently with my sister community…
When
time is spent with only women, we heal, inspire, and empower one another.
Without sister time, I don't think I would be able to breathe as easily. This
poem grew out of my profound gratitude for women in my life, and all my sisters
around the world.
Women’s Tipi Time
We sat close to the
fire,
poking it, adding
wood,
watching the smoke
rise before escaping
through the funnel
of the tipi.
We formed a circle,
sent whirls of
dreams,
heart visions,
shared our heart
wrenching life stories
mostly that men had
burnt into our lives,
and placed them into
the hands
of our ancestors
for them to carry.
Those prayers
are surely to find
their way
into the trees
during this season of
change
among the rusty
leaves
that now break and
fall
then land on the
animal hide floor.
We, ladies, slept.
Head to the fire,
tossing in the night,
switching sides
when our child
bearing hipbones
grew sore
from the hardening,
cold ground.
Late in the night,
I took T.P. from the
grocery bag
hanging in the tipi,
squatted outside,
spotted a shooting
star between the canopy of trees.
From those woods
who take women’s
burdens away.
I wished peace
for whatever may come
of us all.
