AWAKENING TO THE SUN by Sonja Marie Phillips- Hollie

I have always been fascinated with the visible and invisible worlds…

I somehow felt that there had to be some type of eventual merging between the two realms. My dreams often depict me in flight embracing a dark universe filled with bright stars, an array of colorful cosmic visions.

This poem symbolizes my spiritual awakening, my inner transformation and journey leading me to a hidden truth. The Sun depicts the light outside of me that shines upon me, guiding and protecting me along the way. I describe a darker path that also engulfs my life, by introducing the lines about angels fallings, bound and unknowing, where I attempt to reveal the other part of my unseen truth.

My poem takes the reader on a spiritual quest in seeking a divine source in the invisible and visible world. Only to discover her lifelong belief may have been somewhat misconstrued. Having to acknowledge the realization that the Divinity she seeks was accessible to her all along! Accessible to all! And it was this revelation that began my awakening.

Awaken To The Sun

Awaken to the Sun
it is the light outside of myself
black dust like ashes arises,
in this world
I am bound,
like angels falling,
soulless and unknowing
Bathed in delusions
intoxicated with sin....
-Resurrected
into this matrix that never ends.
Out of darkness beyond the stars
my soul awakens
unto the Sun.
which nourishes, protects
and guides me
to the other side.
on this journey
I am traveling,
in and out
of portals,
entering new dimensions,
hidden
so deep inside
the eternal covenant of my mind.

Sonja Marie Phillips- Hollie: I was born in the Windy City of Chicago but now reside in Texas. I have a degree in Spanish and have worked as a bilingual translator, supervisor and Data Analyst for Student Life Programs on campus. One of my life passions has been acting as a counselor and mentor for at risk high school students. I enjoy reading and writing poetry, dancing and hope to one day write my first novel. I am a blend of many different ethnicities, and embrace them all! I also have a fascination with Egypt: a theme that often appears in my poems. I'm a mother of three beautiful daughters. My hope is that my poetry touches someone’s heart, comforts the lonely, or redeems a lost soul.

  1. Soul awakening is a profound and transformative experience, marking a pivotal moment of spiritual enlightenment and self-realization. It transcends mere intellectual understanding, delving deep into the essence of one's being. This awakening often emerges through life-altering events, intense introspection, or spiritual practices like meditation and mindfulness. During this process, individuals experience a heightened sense of awareness and connection to the universe, recognizing the interwoven nature of all existence. It brings a profound sense of peace, purpose, and clarity, illuminating life's true meaning and one's place within it. Barriers of ego and materialism fall away, replaced by compassion, love, and empathy. As one aligns with their higher self, one embarks on a journey of continuous growth, embracing the beauty of the present moment and the boundless potential within. Soul awakening is not a destination but an ongoing voyage of self-discovery, leading to a harmonious and fulfilling life in tune with the universe's divine rhythm.

IN THE STILLNESS OF THE NIGHT by Ginny Brannan

Just take a moment to pause... When life becomes rote, and frustration grows from being immersed in the same routine—different day, sometimes we need to remind ourselves that peace is still there—within our grasp— if we just take a moment to pause and enjoy the stillness and beauty around us. In the Stillness of the Night  by Ginny Brannan Late winter’s eve and all is still the lawn lies bathed in silver light— gray shadows race across the yard and climb atop the windowsill to draw my gaze upon the sight. I stare out to the moonlit night, across the deck and wooded path fresh–painted by new fallen snow. The scene infuses with delight; this gift inside storm’s aftermath. Half–buried now, the old birdbath lies shadowed deep in indigo— it waits on promise of the spring when arctic chill has finally passed and snow gives way to new green grass. With gratitude, I hedge to go; tranquility allays my soul… I turn ...

IMAGINE A WOMAN by Patricia Lynn Reilly

This poem invites you to look upon yourself with loving kindness… Gazing at your own true reflection, you will discover that everything you have longed for “out there” is already within you! I invite you to love your creativity fiercely. Faithfully plant seeds, allowing under-the-ground dormant seasons, nurturing your creative garden with love and gratitude. In the fullness of time, the green growing things thrust forth from the ground. It's a faithful, trustworthy process. AND it takes time and patience.  Blessed is the fruit of your creative womb! I invite you to trust your vision of the world and express it. With wonder and delight, paint a picture, create a dance, write a book, and make up a song. To give expression to your creative impulses is as natural as your breathing. Create in your own language, imagery, and movement. Follow no script. Do not be limited by the customary way things have been expressed. Your creative intuition is original. Ga...

STILL I RISE by Maya Angelou

Six years ago, I had the privilege of listening to Maya Angelou speak live on the value of poetry at the University of Florida. I share these reflections with you again today, in honor of her birthday.  I was relieved to get one of the last seats available for this rare event, having arrived at five for Maya Angelou ’s free speech at eight. The historically long line began with people settled into beach chairs in winter coats busying themselves on tablets, or eating sandwiches for dinner. As helicopters hovered above and newscasters below, I felt the excitement of realizing that thousands of people were gathering together to hear an eighty four year old black woman recite her poetry! Maya Angelou speaking at University of Florida on Feb. 27, 2013  When the curtain rose -after an overflow of hundreds were sent away- we lucky ones on the inside greeted Maya with a standing ovation, as she smiled sweetly, beginning her talk using metaphors from nature. Maya asked...
