It's amazing how easily perspective can change....

We can become almost blinded by what happens to us/around us ...it's all we can see. If we can pull back and shift how we perceive our lives it becomes clear that, in fact, these things are tiny, almost imperceptible in the vastness of the universe. It is only then we can see the ART, the path, the vastness, the love. Always the love.

Where once

The days

Blended

Reflection upon

Reflection

Here, now

They are dawning

Propelled

With purpose

Attention

The fragile tips

Of frost, blooming

On the early

Morning grass

The promise

Of a new day

Before the great

Swelling tide of art

We speak of love

Yet, it must be

Tended

There is no other way

Salyna Gracie is the director of Red Lotus Dance Company. She performs and teaches Middle Eastern Dance and facilitates the Red Lotus SEEDs program which mentors teen girls through dance at her studio in a small rural town in Washington state. Salyna’s dancing reflects a commitment to personal growth by internalizing rhythms and expressing emotion through the body – dancing from the heart. STILL I RISE by Maya Angelou

Six years ago, I had the privilege of listening to Maya Angelou speak live on the value of poetry at the University of Florida. I share these reflections with you again today, in honor of her birthday. I was relieved to get one of the last seats available for this rare event, having arrived at five for Maya Angelou ’s free speech at eight. The historically long line began with people settled into beach chairs in winter coats busying themselves on tablets, or eating sandwiches for dinner. As helicopters hovered above and newscasters below, I felt the excitement of realizing that thousands of people were gathering together to hear an eighty four year old black woman recite her poetry!
